WATER ACCESS & APPEAL

Promoting healthy beverage choices through a youth-led research and leadership project.

About this initiative.

We're working with a youth team at Roosevelt Middle School on a health improvement project focused on water access and consumption. This project is designed to put the power in the hands of youth. Students get to participate in fun activities, gain valuable leadership skills, and learn how to use research for positive change.

During the 2021-2022 School Year, students participating in this project surveyed their fellow students and helped advocate for the installation of 8 brand-new water bottle filling stations on campus. The students also launched a communications campaign to promote the new bottle fillers and encourage their peers to drink more water through morning announcement messages, creative posters near water stations, and healthy beverage demonstrations at lunch.

After completing the post-survey at the end of the school year, we learned that about 75% of students drink from the water fountains at school (up from 55% in the pre-survey).
