SMARTER LUNCHROOMS MOVEMENT

Using research-based approaches to guide students towards healthy eating choices in the cafeteria.

About this initiative.

The Smarter Lunchrooms Movement uses research-based strategies to "nudge" students to select, eat, and enjoy healthy food options in schools, without eliminating choice. Smarter Lunchroom strategies are easy, inexpensive, and fun to implement.

We're working to implement Smarter Lunchroom Movement strategies at Jefferson, Mann, Cerritos and Columbus Elementary Schools. These strategies include:

  • Displaying colorful healthy eating posters in the cafeteria

  • Involving students in the development of creative, descriptive names for menu items

  • Installing new cafeteria menu boards

  • Displaying student artwork in the cafeteria

  • Offering fruit and vegetable taste tests to students

Fourth grade students and families at these schools also get to participate in nutrition education workshops led by our CalFresh partners Adventist Health Glendale Foundation.
